A fellow Waldorf (inspired) Mom has a really bright and motivated daughter. A few of us were hiking one day and she was telling us how her daughter just made a knitted scarf for her doll and she wanted to encourage this handwork creativity in her daughter. Although this Mom is extremely talented in other areas, handwork isn’t her “thing” and so she was asking us for advice. Since her daughter is so internally motivated, we all thought that she should gather together some supplies and just see what her daughter could create. Since I have a big handwork stash, I told her that I’d be happy to pull together some things for her and create a “sewing basket for kids”.
It was easy to do and a lot of fun! I wanted to include all of the necessary supplies like fabric, needles, thread, and yarn and make sure that it would be organized and easy-to-keep-organized. As I’ve found with my own handwork stash, it’s hard to get inspired by your materials if they’re in an unorganized mess…
I started with some cute and sturdy baskets that I found at the thrift store.
I found a few scraps of fabric and made them into little “bolts” like I saw someone do on Pinterest and then rolled up pieces of wool felt. I gathered notions like little buttons, pieces of ribbon and trim, and scraps of wool felt and tucked them into cute wooden boxes. I filled a pincushion with pins and large eye needles. I rolled up small bobbins of embroidery floss.
I filled the knitting basket with a rainbow of wool yarn, included a couple sets of wooden needles (easier for younger fingers to hold on to), and made sure to string a knitting darning needle on the handle.
All of the fixings for doll clothes, scarves, or small sewn or knitted animals! I hope that this “sewing basket for kids” will inspire my friend’s daughter to create some beautiful things…

We have handwork baskets that hold current projects, but I love the idea of making a sewing basket just for the boys for inspiration. What a lovely gift. Thanks for the idea Lori.

I saw little boxes like these the other day and fell in love with them, but wasn’t sure how I’d use them. Thanks for the inspiration!
HI Ericasue,
Thanks for visiting! I visited your blog and it seems like your children are still young, but maybe they could use a knitting basket when they’re a little older? Your wooden play gym that you made is genius! Thank you and aloha, Lori
Your creativity is so inspiring Lori! Any child (or adult) would love to receive such a well thought out, beautifully presented package!
Please share it this weekend with us!
