What a miracle…

Our sweet dog just gave birth to three puppies.  The little sisters (yes, they are all girls…) are incredibly small and delicate.  They curl up into each other to nap and lie on top of each other to nurse.  They couldn’t be more cute. (although my husband jokes that they look a little like rats)

I’m a Mom who has given birth, but this was the first time that I’ve actually seen a birth.  I was awestruck to witness our dog’s strength and instincts.  She knew exactly what to do.

And her maternal instinct is incredibly endearing.  The slightest peep from one of her puppies sends her right to them–licking them, nursing them.  Although she is a ravenous nursing mother, she will drop the food in her mouth to go to her pups.  Today she has begun bringing her favorite stuffed toys and digging a place for them to rest right alongside her real puppies.  We had no idea that she considered these toys to be her “children” too.

We are trying to keep our house quiet and dark for the new puppies and each of us are taking turns keeping an eye on them from afar.  Although both of my children weren’t keenly interested in the birth like me, they curl up with a book and quietly watch the puppies for an hour or more.

We have a bigger family now.  The miracle of life…
